Falls in grocery and big-box stores
Big stores have written cleaning and inspection routines. Whether they followed them is often the case.

Common hazards
| Area | Typical hazard |
|---|---|
| Produce | Grapes, leaves and water from misters on the floor |
| Freezer and dairy aisles | Condensation and leaking cases |
| Entrances | Rainwater with no mats or warning signs |
| Tall shelving | Merchandise falling from upper shelves |
| Garden and outdoor sections | Hoses, soil and water on smooth concrete |
What the store knew
Georgia generally asks whether the store had actual or constructive knowledge of the hazard. Constructive knowledge can be shown when an employee was nearby and could easily have seen and removed it, or when the hazard was there long enough that a reasonable inspection should have found it.
Records that matter
- Video from every camera covering the aisle, not just a short clip
- Floor “sweep” or inspection logs
- The incident report and employee statements
- The store’s written safety policies
Video goes first. Many stores keep footage only for a short time. See our fall evidence checklist and video request letter.
